Anthony was born in Devon and read law at Exeter University. 

Anthony was a corporate lawyer with Freshfields for over 30 years, the last 10 as the Senior Partner. In 2006 he joined Rothschild as Executive Vice Chairman, leaving in 2017.  Among various roles, Anthony is Chair of Forward Institute (which runs responsible leadership programmes), Hambro Perks Ltd, an investing business and Tate St Ives Advisory Council.  He is also a Trustee of the Conran Foundation, Tate Foundation and The Difference.

Previous roles include Vice Chair of the BBC Board of Governors, a member of the Board of the Department for Education, a Trustee and Chair of Eden Trust (owner of the Eden Project), Chair of Teach First’s Business Development Council and of Bloomsbury Publishing plc, a Trustee of the Royal Opera House and of Paul Hamlyn Foundation.  He also served for a number of years as a member of the Advisory Board of Exeter University’s Business School.  He has chaired reviews on Youth Crime and Antisocial Behaviour, Press Regulation and Barclays PLC’s Business Practices.
