ST Telemedia GDC to test Iceotope liquid cooling in Singapore

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) will test Iceotope's liquid cooling systems in its R&D center in Singapore.

The proof-of-concept, jointly managed with long-term Iceotope partner Schneider, will test the use of Iceotope's immersion-cooled systems in Singapore. Authorities there are limiting data center construction due to concerns over energy and land use by data centers, both of which could potentially be eased by the use of liquid cooling.

“Liquid cooling technology is no longer a niche implementation but rather a near-term technology that, when scaled, can enable data centers to manage higher power density, reduce energy consumption and yet maintain operational reliability,” said Daniel Pointon, Group CTO, STT GDC.

Liquid-cooling provides better heat removal, and reduces the need for energy-hungry chillers and computer room air-conditioning (CRACs) units. The test will use Iceotope’s chassis system, which immerses electronics in a dielectric liquid, within conventional racks. The dielectric is touch-safe, non-conductive, non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-ozone depleting, says Iceotope.

David Craig, Iceotope’s CEO, said the companies would deploy "a liquid-cooled solution that brings game-changing savings in the use of water, energy, and space to enterprises driving towards net-zero”.

Schneider has been a long-term partner of Iceotope, since it took part in a venture funding round for the liquid cooling specialist in 2014. The two launched liquid-cooled racks in 2019, designed with the help of Avnet. “We are looking forward to supporting STT GDC in their efforts to become an even more sustainable business and continuing to play a key role in mitigating climate change with our customers and partners,” said Michael Kurniawan Iskandar, Secure Power Business VP for Singapore, Malaysia & Brunei Cluster at Schneider Electric.
